Arabic version of the
De sphaericis(كتاب الأكر) by Theodosius of Bithynia (ثاودوسيوس; Θεοδοìσιος; c 160-c 100 BC). The preface (f. 1v, lines 3-5, transcribed below) states that it was translated from Greek into Arabic by Qusṭā ibn Lūqā (قسطا بن لوقا; c 820-912), up to Chapter 3, figure 5, at the order of Abū al-‘Abbās Aḥmad (أبو العباس أحمد) son of the caliph al-Mu‘taṣim bi-llāh (المعتصم بالله; reg. 833-842), that the rest was translated by another, and that the translation was corrected by Thābit ibn Qurrah (ثابت ابن قرة; d. 901).The text was copied at Yazd in Jumādá II 1014/October 1605 by Ibn ‘Abd al-Raḥīm Abū al-Qāsim Yaḥyá al-Astar’ābādī (ابن عبد الرحيم أبو القاسم يحيى الأسترآبادي; see colophon, f. 62r, lines 8-10, transcribed below). On the title page (f. 7r) and on f. 30r, where the title of this text appears on the lower half of the page, the title and author are given incorrectly as كتاب الاكبر لتأدووسي اوس. Treatise on astronomy by Bahā’ al-Dīn (بهاء الدين) and Shams al-Dīn Abū Bakr Muḥammad ibn Aḥmad al-Kharaqī (شمس الدين أبو بكر محمد بن أحمد الخرقي, d. 1138-39), elsewhere called Abū Muḥammad ‘Abd al-Jabbār ibn ‘Abd al-Jabbār ibn Muḥammad (أبو محمد عبد الجبار بن عبد الجبار بن محمد). The author's colophon gives his name as Muḥammad ibn Aḥmad ibn Abū Bakr al-Ḥanafī ( محمد بن أحمد بن أبي بكر الحنفي, see f. 110r, line 9, transcribed below).According to the author's colophon in this copy, the text was composed in 762/1360-61 more than two centuries after the author's known death date (see f. 110r, line 10, transcribed below).The text is divided into two parts (قسمان), the first of which is subdivided into twenty chapters (أبواب) some of which are further subdivided into sections (فصول), and the second part is divided into fourteen chapters (أبواب). De sphaera et cylindro(Περὶ σφαίρας καὶ κυλίνδρου;كتاب الكرة والأسطوانة) by the mathematician (Ἀρχιμήδης; أرشميدس; fl. 3rd century BC), revised by Thābit ibn Qurrah (ثابت بن قرة; d. 901) and presented here in the edition of Naṣīr al-Dīn al-Ṭūsī (نصير الدين الطوسي; d. 1274) along with a commentary based largely on that by Eutocius of Ascalon (Ἐυτόκιος ὁ Ἀσκαλωνίτης; أوطيوقيوس العسقلاني; d. ca 540), the
