Commentary by Shihāb al-Dīn Abū al-‘Abbās Aḥmad ibn Rajab ibn Ṭaybūghā al-Majdī al-Shāfi‘ī (شهاب الدين أبو العباس أحمد بن رجب بن طيبوغا المجدي الشافعي, d 1447) of the
Talkhīṣ aʿmāl al-ḥisāb(تلخيص أعمال الحساب,
Epitome of the Operations of Arithmetic) by Abū al-‘Abbās Aḥmad ibn Muḥammad al-Marrākushī (أبو العباس أحمد بن محمد المراكشي, d. 1321), known as Ibn al-Bannā’ (ابن البناء, see fol. 1v, line 16). The title of the commentary is found in the author's preface (f. 1v, line 25).The copy was completed on Monday 17 Rabī‘ II 840/29 October 1436 by Abū al-Barakāt Muḥammad ibn Muḥammad ibn Muḥammad al-‘Irāqī (أبو البركات محمد بن محمد بن محمد العراقي); it was copied from a manuscript in Ibn al-Majdī's hand, which was completed on Thursday 6 Dhū al-Ḥijjah 834/August 16 1431 (see author's and scribe's colophons, f. 203v, lines 10-11 and 16-18, transcribed below). Abū al-Barakāt al-‘Irāqī was apparently Ibn al-Majdī's student, since he refers to Ibn al-Majdī as 'my master' (سيدي, scribe's colophon, f. 203v, line 14, transcribed below). Abū al-Barakāt al-‘Irāqī states that he copied the text for his own use (see scribe's colophon, f. 203v, line 17, transcribed below). The manuscript was made an endowment (وقف) as noted at the head of many pages.Ibn al-Bannā’'s
Talkhīṣ aʿmāl al-ḥisābis divided into two parts (جزؤان) each subdivided into sections (أقسام, 3 and 2 respectively) and chapters (أبواب). The commentary on Part Two (الجزء الثاني) begins on f. 104v.Folio 48a is a fragment of a letter dated 18 J[umādá II ?] [12]20/13 September (?) 1805 that has been bound into the volume.Between folios 152 and 153 is a slip of paper containing a fragment of a note apparently on the calculation of inheritance shares (علم الفرائض).Folios 181-82 are a later bifolium of Western laid paper bound into the volume. They contain a short commentary concerning the calculation of inheritance shares (علم الفرائض) signed by the author, Muḥammad ibn al-Marḥūm al-Shaykh Yūsuf al-Faraḍī (محمد ابن المرحوم الشيخ يوسف الفرضي), and dated Tuesday 27 Dhū al-Qa‘dah 1157/29 December (?) 1744 (f. 102r, lines 15-16).After the colophon (ff. 204r-206v) are various notes on mathematical subjects. Folio 204r-204v contains a long note 'on the determination of repetitions of the multiplication by means of two errors' (في كيفية استخراج تكرار الضرب بالخطائين). Folio 206r contains an short addendum (ذيل and زيادة) to a work on chess by Abū Bakr Muḥammad ibn Yaḥyá al-Ṣūlī (أبو بكر محمد بن يحيى الصولي, d. 947). The addendum is said to be copied by the hand of its anonymous author and is followed by a brief biographical sketch of al-Ṣūlī copied by the same hand. Codex; ff. i+206+iMaterial: Eastern laid paper; replacement folios 1-3, 6-9, 20-21 and two whole quires (quinions) ff. 28-38, 49-58 are western laid paper as are ff. 48a and 181-82 which are later insertions (dated [12]20/1805 and 1157/1744 respectively) now bound into the volumeDimensions: 235 x 150 mm leaf [190 x 120 mm written]Foliation: British Museum foliation in pencilRuling:

Mathematical treatise on the construction of magic squares and triangles (العدد الوفق). The text is defective at the beginning and end so the author's name is unknown, but in what remains of the preface the author records the title of the work and says that his intention is to compile all that has been written on the subject up to date of the text's composition: 517/1123-4 (see f. 28r, lines 4-5). Seven authorities on magic squares are cited:al-Mufaḍḍal ibn Thābit al-Ḥarrānī (المفضل بن ثابت الحراني, d. before 978-79, see Ridwān 'Abū al-Khaṭṭāb al-Mufaḍḍal ibn Thābit al-Ṣābi’' [1990]): ff. 60v, 80v, 94r, 95v and 102r;Abū al-Wafā’ al-Būzjānī (أبو الوفاء البوزجاني, d. 997 or 998): ff. 64r, 87r, 91v, 94r, 95v;Ibn Haytham (ابن هيثم, d. ca 1040): f. 35v;Majd al-Dīn al-Amīr b. It is illustrated with 430 squares, triangles, tables and other diagrams.Maqālah One: Introductions (المقالة الأولى في المقدمة, ff. 29v-35v);Maqālah Two: The Simple Square (المقالة الثانية في الوفق الساذج, ff. 35v-58v);Maqālah Three: Bordered Squares (المقالة الثالثة في الوفق المحلّق, ff. 58v-80v);Maqālah Four: The Wonderful Bordered Odd Square (المقالة الرابعة في الوفق الفرد والغريب المحلّق, ff. 80v-93v);Maqālah Five: The Banded (?) Commentary on Ptolemy's (Claudius Ptolemaeus; c 90-c 168)
Almagest(كتاب المجسطي), said to be by Abū Naṣr Muḥammad ibn Muḥammad ibn Tarkhān al-Fārābī (أبو نصر محمد بن محمد بن ترخان الفارابي; ca 870-950), but in fact by Avicenna (أبو علي بن سينا; ca 980-1037).Notes on front paper iii verso and f. 1r state that the author is al-Fārābī and do not mention Avicenna. The author of the introduction, however, mentions the
Kitāb al-lawāḥiq(كتاب اللواحق ; f. 1v, line 4) as one of his own works, and this text is known to have been written by Avicenna (see Kātip Çelebi, Kitāb kashf al-ẓunūn, vol. 2, col. 1454 [Bayrūt: Dār Iḥyaʾ al-Turāth al-ʻArabī, 1941-1955]). Treatise on mathematical geography for cartographers by Suhrāb (سهراب; see f. 3, line 1) composed between between 902 and 945 (see LeStrange, 'Description of Mesopotamia and Baghdād',
Journal of the Royal Asiatic Society[1895], p. 2).According to the colophon (f. 63r, lines 4-15, transcribed below), this copy was made from the copy of a correct copy that Ibn al-Warraq (ابن الوراق, probably the bibliographer Ibn al-Nadīm [ابن النديم], d. ca 995) said was in the handwriting of the Syriac bishop and lexicographer al-Ḥasan ibn Bahlul (الحسن ابن بهلول, called here ابن البهلول, better known by his Syriac name Bar Bahlūl [ܒܪ ܒܗܠܘܠ]; fl. 10th century) translator from Syriac into Arabic of the
Kunnāsh, or medical compendium, of Ibn Serapion (ابن سرابيون; fl. 9th century).Due to the mention of Ibn Serapion in the colophon, scholars have often attibuted this work to Ibn Serapion. The colophon does not, however, mention Ibn Serapion in order to identify the author of the ‘Ajā’ib al-aqālīm al-sab‘ah, but rather to identify Bar Bahlūl. Furthermore, since the physician Ibn Serapion is thought to have written his
Kunnāshin 873, while the geographer Suhrāb is thought to have written the
‘Ajā’ib al-aqālīm al-sab‘ahsome time between 902 and 945, it is not likely that these two books are the works of the same author (see

Arabic version of the
Mechanica(Μηχανικά) by the mathematician and engineer Hero of Alexandria (Ἥρων ὁ Ἀλεξανδρεύς; إيرن; fl. 1st century). Only fragments of the original Greek text survive. The beginnings of Chapters Two and Three (ff. 18r, line 2 and 39v, line 2) give the title of the Arabic version as '

A work on the principles of specific gravity probably falsely attributed to the mathematician Euclid of Alexandria (Εὐκλείδης; أقليدس; fl. 300 BC). The translation, presumabely from the Greek now lost, is said to have been corrected by Thābit ibn Qurrah (ثابت ابن قرة; d. 901; f. 98v, line 3, transcribed below). Two fragmentary Latin translations of roughly the first half of this treatise (up to about the end of f. 99v) exists under the title
