- Draft letter in pencil, possibly written by Lewis Pelly for the Viceroy's approval, in response to a letter from Sirdar Sultan Ahmed Khan to the Viceroy which had been transmitted by Lewis Pelly.The letter thanking the Sirdar for his 'friendly sentiments' towards India and expressing his pleasure at hearing that the Sirdar's rulership is stable and prosperous.The letter goes on to reciprocate the friendly feelings expressed, to state that the British Government would have no intention of interfering with his Highness' rule or weakening his position, and to inform His Highness of their intention of sending an officer to read the letter out in open Durbar so that there could be a public declaration of the British Government's friendly intentions towards His Highness' Government.A note written in ink below the letter requests copies be made in English and Persian and sent to several individuals including Charles Alison, British Minister at Tehran, and asking that the Persian Government be thanked for their assistance in facilitating Captain Lewis Pelly's transit from Meshed [Mashhad] to their frontier with Herat.2 folios
