A copy of Galen's Τέχνη ἰατρική (
Ars medica) in the Arabic version thought to be by Ḥunayn ibn Isḥāq al-‘Ibādī. In Arabic, the text is called
Ars parva). The text is accompanied by a commentary by Abū al-Faraj ‘Abd Allāh Ibn al-Ṭayyib The copy is dated Dhū al-Ḥijjah 448 (February-March 1057; see colophon fol. 114v, line 16, transcribed below), just 14 years after Ibn al-Ṭayyib's death in 435/1043.Begins (f. 2v, lines 2-6):تفسير الشيخ الحـ[...] A note in English written about AD 1773 and bound into the volume as folio 1 gives a brief history of the manuscript, mistakenly claiming that Ibn al-Ṭayyib was a Jew; he was a Nestorian Christian.Codex; ff. i+114+iMaterial: PaperDimensions: 210 x 143 mm leaf [143 x 91 mm written]Foliation: British Museum foliation in pencilRuling: No ruling visible; 17-20 lines per page; vertical spacing 11 lines per 10 cmScript:

An early and complete copy of the comprehensive astronomical work, or
Canon, by Abū al-Rayḥān Muḥammad ibn Aḥmad al-Bīrūnī (أبو الريحان محمد بن أحمد البيروني, ca 973-1048). The
al-Qanūn al-Masʿūdīwas dedicated to Sultan Mas‘ūd of Ghaznī (reg. 1030-1040), and summarises the astronomy of the
Almagest(كتاب المجسطي) of Ptolemy (Claudius Ptolemaeus; c 90-c 168) and brings it up to date by adjusting stellar longitudes to account for the almost nine centuries elapsed between the two authors, and by adding astronomical advancements drawn from Arabic, Persian and Sanskrit sources. The copy was completed in Rabī‘ I 570/Sept.-Oct. 1174 in Baghdad by an anonymous scribe. The text is divided into 11 treatises (مقالات) subdivided into chapters (أبواب) and then sections (فصول). A detailed table of contents is found on ff. 2r-5r.Contents:Treatise One (المقالة الأول), eleven introductory chapters (ff. 5v-17v);Treatise Two (المقالة الثاني), twelve chapters on calendars and chronologies (ff. 18r-51r);Treatise Three (المقالة الثالثة), ten chapters on trigonometry (ff. 52r-65v);Treatise Four (المقالة الرابعة), twenty-six chapters on spherical astronomy (ff. 66r-91r);Treatise Five (المقالة الخامسة), eleven chapters on geodesy (ff. 91v-109r);Treatise Six (المقالة السادسة), eleven chapters on solar motion and time (ff. 109v-131r);Treatise Seven (المقالة السابعة) eleven chapters on lunar motion. (ff. 131v-158r);Treatise Eight (المقالة الثامنة) seventeen chapters on eclipses (ff. 158v-179r);Treatise Nine (المقالة التاسعة) nine chapters on the fixed stars (ff. 179v-211v);Treatise Ten (المقالة العاشرة) thirteen chapters on the planets (ff. 212r-242r);Treatise Eleven (المقالة الحادي عشر) eleven chapters on astrology (ff. 242v-262r).Begins (f. 1v, lines 2-5):القانون المسعوديعمل أبي الريحان محمد بن أحمد البيروني رحمه اللهالمسعود من سعد بالله وتفرد تباييده اياه عن الأشكال والأشباه فلا واضع لمن رفع ولا واجد لما منع واني كان يبلغ ملكالإسلام مشارق الأرض المعمورة ومغاربها وينتاهي خبره إلى أباعدها بعد أقاربها لو لا أظهاره تعالى العزة لرسوله وللمرسـ[ـلين]Ends (f. 262, lines 10-12):... والسلمCodex; ff. iii+262+iiiMaterial: PaperDimensions: 334 x 215 mm leaf [260 x 180 mm written; the left margin is often not respected]Foliation: British Museum foliation in pencil; eastern Arabic foliation in black inkRuling:

Compendium (كناش) of medicine by Abū al-Ḥasan Aḥmad ibn Muḥammad al-Ṭabarī al-Turunjī (أبو الحسن أحمد بن محمد الطبري الترنجي), personal physician to the Buyid amīr Rukn al-Dawlah (ركن الدولة; reg. 947-76).A table of contents by a hand other than that of the main scribe appears on ff. 1Cr-3v.According to the final colophon, the copy was completed by Kaẓim (كاظم) in the month of Rajab during the second regnal year, but the monarch whose regnal year is intended is not mentioned (f. 659v, lines 4-7, transcribed below). More specific details are given in the colophon to Book Six, although this colophon, in Persian, appears to have been added by another, perhaps later, hand and is therefore suspect. According to the colophon to Book Six, the copying of that section was completed at the residence of Sayyid Zayn al-‘Ābidīn (سيد زين العابدين) in Shāhjahānābād (Delhi) by Muḥammad Kāẓim Kashmīrī (محمد كاظم كشميري) on Thursday 3 Sha‘bān 1117/20 November 1705 (f. 301r, lines 18-21, transcribed below). This date is somewhat difficult to reconcile with the regnal date given in the final colophon, since if we take that date to refer to the second year of the reign of Bahādur Shāh I whose reign began in 1119/1707, we get a completion date of Rajab 1121/September-October 1709, some four years after the completion of Book Six.The text is divided into ten books (مقالات). Book One is subdivided into sections (فصول), and Books Two to Ten are subdivided into chapters (أبواب).Contents:Book One (المقالة الأولى; ff. 5v-48r);Book Two (المقالة الثانية; ff. 48r-81r);Book Three (المقالة الثالثة; ff. 82r-155v);Book Four (المقالة الرابعة; ff. 155r-232v);Book Five (المقالة الخامسة; ff. 233r-256r);Book Six (المقالة السادسة; ff. 256v-301v);Book Seven (المقالة السابعة; ff. 302v-407r);Book Eight (المقالة الثامنة; ff. 407v-450r);Book Nine (المقالة التاسعة; ff. 450v-550v);Book Ten (المقالة العاشرة; ff. 550v-659v).Begins (f. 4v, lines 2-3):الحمد لله المتفرد بالوحدانية والقدرة والرحمة والإفاضة والجود مبدعالكل ومشرف النفس وواهب العقل والجواد الذي لم نجل العالم قط من فيضهColophon to Book Six (f. 301r, lines 16-21):تمت المقالة السادسة من الكناش المعروف بامعالجات البقراطيةوالحمد لواهب العقل ومبدع الكلّ وصلواته على نبيه لمحمّد (!) تمت المقالة العاشرة من الكناشالملقب بالمعالجات البقراطيةتمت في شهر رجب المرجبفي وقت العصر يومالسبت سنة 2 جلوسكتبه كاظمCodex; ff. i+661Material: Eastern laid paperDimensions: 286 x 165 mm leaf [205 x 100 mm written]Foliation: India Office Library foliation stamped in pencilRuling: No ruling visible; 23 lines per page; vertical spacing 11 lines per 10 cmScript:

Concise handbook of medicine by Abū al-Ḥasan Sa‘īd ibn Hibat Allāh ibn al-Ḥusayn (أبو الحسن سعيد بن هبة الله بن الحسين; d. 1101), personal physician to the Abbasid caliph al-Muqtadī (المقتدي, reg. 1056-1094) to whom this work is dedicated (f. 3v, line 9). The title of the text is often abbreviated to
Kitāb al-mughnī fī al-ṭibb(كتاب المغني في الطب).The text is arranged by illness, and each one is assigned to a table. Each table takes up a page, and all pages of the text except for ff. 4r, 3v and 105r contain tables. The tables are divided into four cells containing information about (1) the illness (مرض); (2) its cause (سبب); (3) its symptoms (عرض); and (4) the regimen (تدبير) recommended for its cure, often including a prescription (صفة).The copy was completed at Baghdad by Mattá ibn Hibat Allāh ibn ‘Abd Allāh (متى بن هبة الله بن عبد الله) on Wednesday 19 Jumādá II 567/16 February 1172. The scribe also gives the date 24 Tammūz 1503 of the Seleucid Era, but there is a discrepancy since this equates to 12 Rajab 588/Friday 24 July 1192, while the AH transcription date of 19 Jumādá II 567 equates to 27 Shubāṭ 1483 of the Seleucid era. The scribe produced his copy from a copy produced by a student of the author, and he collated his copy with the author's own draft copy (see colophon, f. 105r, lines 14-19, transcribed below).A table of contents and other medical notes by a later hand are found on ff. 1r-2v.F. 106r contains a computus table for reackoning the date of Easter using the Rūmī or Syro-Macedonian calendar of the Seleucid Era. An accompanying Arabic note written vertically on f. 105v describes the use of the table and is signed by Ilīyā the Metropolitan of Bājarmī (إليا مطران باجرمي), Bājarmī being the Arabic rendering of the Syriac Beth Garmai (ܒܝܬ ܓܪ̈ܡܝ), an ecclesiastical province in the Kirkuk region of Iraq. This Arabic note states that the table begins with Easter 1490 of the Seleucid era (574 AH/AD 1179), so the note can be dated to shortly before this time. At the head of f. 105v, above the Arabic text, is a table in Syriac relating to the calculation of Christian feast days. The heading of the first column mentions Easter, while Christmas, Epiphany and Good Friday are mentioned in the line of Syriac text beneath the table.Ff. 106v-108v contain various medical notes, many by the same later hand that wrote the table of contents and medical notes on ff. 1r-2v. On f. 106v there is a prayer for the physician Abū al-Khayr ibn ‘Īsá (أبو الخير بن عيسى المتطبب), perhaps the father of personal physician to the Abbasid caliph al-Nāṣir (reg. 575-622/1180-1225; see Ibn Abī Uṣaybiʿah [ed. Müller], vol. 1, p. 301 and Ullmann, 1970, p. 166).Staining visible on ff. 21v and 22r gives evidence that the manuscript was previously bound in a binding with a flap. والسلمCodex; ff. ii+108+iiMaterial: Eastern laid paperDimensions: 250 x 190 mm leaf [205 x 145 mm text frame]Foliation: Eastern Arabic foliation in black ink, India Office Library foliation stamped in black inkRuling:

This can hardly be the true transcription date since the author was not born until 436 AH/AD 1101. The reading of the date in this colophon has been the subject of controversy, and two Persian notes below the colophon discuss the date. The first reads the date in the colophon as 309 AH/AD 921-22 and notes that this does not conincide with the regnal dates of caliph al-Muqtadī; the second correctly dates the end of al-Muqtadī's reign to 487 AH/AD 1094. The two printed catalogues in which this manuscript appears read the date in the colophon as 534 AH/AD 1139, just 38 years after the death of the author.Begins (f. 4v, lines 2-3):[...] [...] الأزمان التي أوجد المخلوقات بقدرته وفضل الإنسان على جميعها بحكمته وجعله عالمًا متوسطًا ...End and colophon (f. 104) are mutilated and mostly illegible.Codex; ff. i+104+iMaterial: PaperDimensions: 225 x 170 mm leaf [200 x 145 mm written]Foliation: British Museum foliation in pencil; eastyern Arabic foliation in black inkRuling: No ruling visible; average of 20 lines per page; vertical spacing 10 lines per 10 cmScript:

A copy of three medical treatises by the extremely influential Graeco-Roman physician Galen (Claudius Galenus of Pergamon, 129-c 200). The Greek texts were translated by Ḥunayn ibn Isḥāq al-‘Ibādī, and the texts preserved here are probably his Arabic versions (see colophon of Item 2, f. 142v, line 8).The manuscript was completed in Damascus on 9 Rabī‘ I 580 (20 June 1184) by Ibrāhīm ibn Naṣr ibn Ibrāhīm ibn Muḥammad ibn al-Ḥasan ibn Munīr al-Kīlānī (?), who made the copy for his own use (see colophon to Item 3, f. 191v, lines 9-12).Folio 1r contains a table of contents in Arabic; f. 1v contains two lines of pious poetry and a short piece of text linking illnesses with the letters of the alphabet; f. 2r contains six owners’ inscriptions (two deleted), a deleted seal and a prescription for a bandage for headache; f. 143r is blank.Contents:(1)
