40. Wooden statuette of an Egyptian official, probably dating to the First Intermediate Period, ca. 2181-2040 BC. The official is depicted striding with the left leg advanced. He wears a short wig composed of small, echeloned curls and kilt of somewhat unusual cut. Details of the musculature of the torso and legs are indicated. White pigment remains on the eyes and kilt. The arms, feet, and a pendant element of the kilt were carved separately and are now lacking. The wood is split and cracked in ; some areas, particularly on the figure's back.
