An introduction to the principles of alchemy spuriously ascribed to Democritus. This Democritus is not the atomist philosopher of Abdera, but the Greek alchemical authority of the same name, sometimes equated with Bolos of Mendes. The text’s style and content suggest that it is not, in fact, a Greek, pre-Islamic text translated into Arabic. The lower half of fol. 57b and the whole of 58a are taken up by tabulated descriptions of the four elements, and the remaining text is divided into three sections (
maqālāt):Section 1 (ff. 57v line 1 - 59r, line 10) describes a progression of the 4 elements from the grossest (earth) to the most refined (fire) and this progression with that of the 4 seasons;Section 2 (fols. 59a, line 10 - 64a, line 7) deals with the unity of matter; the formation of the microcosm out of opposing forces; the relationship between chemical substances and the four elements and other subjects;Section 3 (ff. 64r, line 7 - 66r, end) is divided into seven parts (
abwāb), each one describing a chemical procedure. The text was copied in the middle of Rajab 925 AH (mid-July AD 1519) at Damascus by Qudrat Allāh al-Marandī al-Ādharī (see colophon, f. 66r).Begins (f. 57v, lines 2-5):قال الحكيم ذومقراطيس إنّه ينبغي لمن طلب هذه الحكمة أنْ يعرف الأركان التي وُضِعَتْعليها والأجناس والطبائع والألوان والائتلاف والبعث والثبات والقراباتوالملائمة والمخالفة والتعادي والطعوم والتمازيج والهئات والدفاع وتزويج الأركانوتركيب الأجناس ثم يضع يده بعد ذلك الصناعةَ المكرّمةَ ...Ends (f. 66r, lines 15-19):... 57v-66rMaterial: PaperDimensions: 215 x 150 mm leaf [168 x 112 mm written]Foliation: British Museum foliation in pencil; Arabic foliation in the purple crayon typical of Lebanese bookdealers of the 19th centuryRuling:

Anonymous treatise on the construction and use of the linear astrolabe (أسطرلاب خطّي), an instrument also known as 'al-Ṭūsī's Rod' (عصا الطوسي), named after its inventor Sharaf al-Dīn al-Muẓaffar ibn Muḥammad al-Ṭūsī (شرف الدين المظفر بن محمد الطوسي; d. 1213).The Persian table of contents (f. 1r) calls the treatise
Risālah-ye dar ‘amal-i asṭurlāb khaṭṭī az khavājah Naṣīr(رساله در عمل اسطرلاب خطي از نصير), mistakenly attributing the text to the later astronomer and mathematician Naṣīr al-Dīn Muḥammad ibn Muḥammad al-Ṭūsī (نصير الدين محمد بن محمد الطوسي; d. 1274).The comprehensive guide to practical astronomy and astronomical instruments

A copy of the
Aphorisms(
Kitāb al-fuṣūl) attributed to Hippocrates (ca 460-370 BC), in an Arabic translation perhaps by Ḥunayn ibn Isḥāq al-‘Ibādī (AD 809-873). John Tytler, the editor of the first printed edition of this text (Calcutta, 1832), owned this manuscript as recorded on f. 1a (see Custodial History for transcription). In an advertisement (i.e. introduction) to his edition of the text, Tytler describes how he came to possess it while living in India as an Assistant Surgeon at the Bengal Establishment of the East India Service :‘[the manuscript was] procured by myself from a native physician in Patna, through the favour of my friend, Henry Douglas, Esq. of that city…’ (
Aphorisms of Hippocrates, 1932, Advertisement).Tytler had two manuscripts of the Aphorisms at his disposal when he prepared his edition, and he considered his other manuscript to be ‘considerably more correct’ than this one (ibid.).The text is divided in to 7 books الأبدان فصل العرق الكثير الذي يجريدائمًا كان حارًا وباردًا يدل على أنه ينبغي أن يخرج من البدن رطوبةإما في القوى فمن فوق وإما في الضعيف من أسفلCodex; ff. ii+27+vMaterial: PaperDimensions: 246 x 160 mm leaf [168 x 86 mm written]Foliation: British Museum foliation in pencilRuling: Misṭarah; 13 lines per page; vertical spacing 8 lines per 10 cmScript: Ta‘līqInk: Black ink, with rubricated headings and overlining in redBinding: British Museum bindingCondition: minor waterstains to lower margin, light foxingMarginalia: Very few scribal corrections and other marginalia

An Arabic translation in question-and-answer form of the pseudo-Galenic text

The Arabic version was begun by Ḥunayn ibn Isḥāq al-‘Ibādī (ca 809-873) and completed by his nephew, Ḥubaysh ibn al-Ḥasan al-Aʻsam (see note explaining this on title page, f. 28r, lines 3-6). Memoir on Astronomy(كتاب التذكرة في الهيئة) by Naṣīr al-Dīn Muḥammad ibn Muḥammad al-Ṭūsī (نصير الدين محمد بن محمد الطوسي; d. 1274). The text is presented as a completion (تكملة) of an earlier
Commentary on Naṣīr's Memoir(شرح التذكرة النصيرية) by ʿAlī ibn Muḥammad ibn ʿAli al-Ḥusaynī al-Jurjānī ( علي بن محمد بن علي الحسيني الجرجاني; d. 1413), known as al-Sayyid al-Sharīf (السيد الشريف). The composition of the text was completed on 4 Muḥarram 932/21 October 1525 (see Saliba, 1994, p. 19).The text contains numerous diagrams, and many unfilled spaces left blank for further diagrams especially towards back of volume. Likewise, only three of the many spaces left blank for rubricated section headings have been filled in (see ff. 65v, 90r and 204v), and the rest have been left blank (see ff. 18v, 49v, 94r, 114r, 118v, 131v, 138v, 145v, 151r, 177v, 181v, 189v, 195r, 229v, 232r, 237v, 240v, 243r, 246r, 248v, 251v, 252v and 257r).The copy was completed on 24 Dhū al-Ḥijja by Ghulām Muḥammad (غلام محمد) neglects to mention the year (see colophon, f. 258r, lines 10-12, transcribed below). The year is not mentioned in the colophon as it currently appears, but seems to have been written, then erased and overwritten with the words 'after Friday prayers' (بعد نماز الجمعة).Begins (f. 1v, lines 2-5):تعاليت يا ذا العرش الأعلى وما أعظم شأنك وتباركت يا مبدع السموات العليوما أجل سلطانك صلى وسلم على سيد الوري وآله أنوار ملك الهدي أما بعدفيقول الفقير إلى الله الغني محمد ابن أحمد الخفري لما كان أجل العلوم بيانًا وأ[و]ثقهابيانًا هو علم الهئة الذي انكشف به أسرار المبدعات واتضحت أحوال المضوعاتEnds (f. 258r, lines 6-9):... هذا انتهى الأبعاد المعلومة المقادير وأما بعدمحدب فلك الأعظم فلا يعلم إلا الله سبحانه وتعالى في بعض النسخ ولنختم الكتاب ههنا حامدين الله تعالى ومصليين على نبيه المصطفى وعلى آله الطيبين الطاهرين حسبنا اللهنعم الوكيلColophon (f. 258r, lines 10-12):قد وقع الفراغ عن تكميل التكملة التي صنفها شمس الدين الخفري شرحًا للتذكرة من مصنفاتنصير الدين الطوسي على يد الفقير إلى الله الغني غلام محمد في رابع العشرونشهر ذوي الحجة يوم الجمعة وقت بعد نماز الجمعةCodex; ff. i+258+iMaterial: Eastern laid paperDimensions: 214 x 124 mm leaf [155 x 80 mm written]Foliation: India Office foliation in pencilRuling: No ruling visible; 21 lines per page; vertical spacing 14 lines per 10 cmScript:

Volume Two of a copy of the
Nabataean Agriculture(الفلاحة النبطية), a work on agronomy in the tradition of the Graeco-Latin
Geoponica, which mixes diverse subjects related to farming such as plant, animal and weather lore; descriptions of agricultural techniques; and much material of a more legendary and magical nature. According to the preface, not present in this manuscript, the text was translated from Nabataean (Aramaic) into Arabic in 291/903-04 by Abū Bakr Aḥmad ibn ‘Alī ibn Qays al-Kasdānī (أبو بكر أحمد بن علي بن قيس الكسداني), known as Ibn Waḥshiyah (ابن وحشية), and then dictated to Abū Ṭālib Aḥmad ibn al-Ḥusayn ibn ‘Alī ibn Aḥmad al-Zayyāt (أبو طالب أحمد بن الحسين بن علي بن أحمد الزيات) in 318/930-31.According to the colophon (f. 256v, line 15, transcribed below), this copy was completed in Ṣafar 389/January-February 999 by Abū al-Khayr Aḥmad ibn Muḥammad al-Ma‘arrī (أحمد بن محمد الشهير بأبي الخير المعري), but the hand appears to date from the 13th century. Perhaps the colophon was copied along with the text from the exemplar. The beginning of the text in this volume corresponds with p. 715, line 6 of the edition by Toufic Fahd (Dimashq: al-Maʻhad al-ʻIlmī al-Faransī lil-Dirāsāt al-ʻArabīyah, 1993-95) vol 1.Begins (f. 3v, lines 2-5):واعلموا أن الدهن إذا طاب ريحه على ما وصفنا وتمكن طيب الريح فيه وتخمر صار ذلك النبات أطيب ريحًاأهو (!)

Proposition 8 from Book 1 of
Gnomonices libri octo(Rome: Apud F. Zanettum, 1581, pp. 26-37) by Christophorus Clavius (Christoph Klau; كلاويوس; 1538-1612; see fol. 3r, line 9), translated into Arabic by Rustam Beg al-Ḥārithī al-Badakhshī ibn Qubād Beg, titled Dīyānat Khān (رستم بيك الحارثي البدخشي بن قباد بيك المخاطب بديانت خان; d. 1705, see fol. 2v, lines 5 and colophon fol. 22r, lines 9-10, transcribed below), a courtier to the Mughal emperor Aurangzeb (reg. 1658-1707). The rough draft of al-Badakhshī's translation by the hand of the translator is preserved in MS IO Islamic 1308, but there Book 1, Proposition 8 is omitted (see fol. 12r). This is likely to be because the translator had previously translated this proposition separately, since he says in the preface that his attention was drawn to Clavius' Gnomonices by his father, Mīrzā Qubād Beg (see fol. 2v, line 8), who was interested in conic sections, the topic of Proposition 8.The translator also explains that he has appended similar material, and this is found in the form of four excerpts from Clavius'

The treatise is divided into 195 chapters (باب) describing diseases arranged from head to food.On the title page (f. 2r), it is erroneously claimed that the text is by the philosopher Abū Naṣr Muḥammad ibn Muḥammad ibn Tarkhān al-Fārābī (أبو نصر محمد بن محمد بن ترخان الفارابي; ca 870-950). In the incipit (f. 2v, line 2, see beginning transcribed below), the author's name is correctly written except that he is given the

Earliest known Arabic treatise on the construction of the astrolabe, by Aḥmad ibn Muḥammad al-Farghānī (أحمد بن محمد الفرغاني; fl. ca 820-860). This manuscript was erroneously dated to the 12th/19th century by Lorch (
Al-Farghānī On the Astrolabe[Munich: Franz Steiner, 2005], p. 17) perhaps on the basis of the first two leaves of the text (ff. 37 and 38), which are nineteenth-century replacements of lost leaves. The text contains sixty-two diagrams and tables:Geometric diagrams (ff. 39r, 40r, 41r, 42r, 42v, 44r, 45r, 45v, 47r, 47v, 49r, 50v, 52v, 53r and 55r);Twenty-five tables for the construction of an astrolabe (ff. 56r-68r);Rule (مسطرة) of astrolabe (f. 71v);Rete (شبكة) of astrolabe (f. 71v, 77r);Plate (صفيحة) of astrolabe (f. 73r, 74r and 74v);Location of diagram missing from exemplar noted (f. 80v);Mater (أم) of astrolabe (f. 76r and 76v, 79r and 81v, 83r and 84r).Begins (f. 37v, lines 2-4):قال أحمد بن محمد الفرغاني إن المتقدمّين من العلماء الحساب والنجومإنّما أدركوا علم حركات الفلك وما يعرض فيه بالمواظبة على النظر والقياسوكان أكثر ما استدلوا به من آلات المقاييس الآلة التي تسمّى ذات الحلقEnds (ff. 84v, line 20-85r, line 2):...

Ars medica(Τέχνη ἰατρική) by Galen of Pergamon (جالينوس ; d. ca 216).The copy is the work of at least three scribes (ff. 2r-23r, 23v-35v, and 36r-100v) and is defective at both the beginning and end. Anonymous epitome (تلخيص) of a lost treatise by Sharaf al-Dīn al-Muẓaffar ibn Muḥammad al-Ṭūsī (شرف الدين المظفر بن محمد الطوسي; d. 1213) on cubic equations fundamental to algebraic geometry (see the epitomiser's preface, f. 35, lines 2-7, transcribed below and edited by Rashed in Sharaf al-Dīn Muẓaffar ibn Muḥammad Ṭūsī,
1 [Paris: Les Belles Lettres, 1986], p. 2).The text contains numerous diagrams, which are collected on a fold out (f. 180r) following the text.
Compendium (كناش) of medicine by Abū al-Ḥasan Aḥmad ibn Muḥammad al-Ṭabarī al-Turunjī (أبو الحسن أحمد بن محمد الطبري الترنجي), personal physician to the Buyid amīr Rukn al-Dawlah (ركن الدولة; reg. 947-76).A table of contents by a hand other than that of the main scribe appears on ff. 1Cr-3v.According to the final colophon, the copy was completed by Kaẓim (كاظم) in the month of Rajab during the second regnal year, but the monarch whose regnal year is intended is not mentioned (f. 659v, lines 4-7, transcribed below). More specific details are given in the colophon to Book Six, although this colophon, in Persian, appears to have been added by another, perhaps later, hand and is therefore suspect. According to the colophon to Book Six, the copying of that section was completed at the residence of Sayyid Zayn al-‘Ābidīn (سيد زين العابدين) in Shāhjahānābād (Delhi) by Muḥammad Kāẓim Kashmīrī (محمد كاظم كشميري) on Thursday 3 Sha‘bān 1117/20 November 1705 (f. 301r, lines 18-21, transcribed below). This date is somewhat difficult to reconcile with the regnal date given in the final colophon, since if we take that date to refer to the second year of the reign of Bahādur Shāh I whose reign began in 1119/1707, we get a completion date of Rajab 1121/September-October 1709, some four years after the completion of Book Six.The text is divided into ten books (مقالات). Book One is subdivided into sections (فصول), and Books Two to Ten are subdivided into chapters (أبواب).Contents:Book One (المقالة الأولى; ff. 5v-48r);Book Two (المقالة الثانية; ff. 48r-81r);Book Three (المقالة الثالثة; ff. 82r-155v);Book Four (المقالة الرابعة; ff. 155r-232v);Book Five (المقالة الخامسة; ff. 233r-256r);Book Six (المقالة السادسة; ff. 256v-301v);Book Seven (المقالة السابعة; ff. 302v-407r);Book Eight (المقالة الثامنة; ff. 407v-450r);Book Nine (المقالة التاسعة; ff. 450v-550v);Book Ten (المقالة العاشرة; ff. 550v-659v).Begins (f. 4v, lines 2-3):الحمد لله المتفرد بالوحدانية والقدرة والرحمة والإفاضة والجود مبدعالكل ومشرف النفس وواهب العقل والجواد الذي لم نجل العالم قط من فيضهColophon to Book Six (f. 301r, lines 16-21):تمت المقالة السادسة من الكناش المعروف بامعالجات البقراطيةوالحمد لواهب العقل ومبدع الكلّ وصلواته على نبيه لمحمّد (!) تمت المقالة العاشرة من الكناشالملقب بالمعالجات البقراطيةتمت في شهر رجب المرجبفي وقت العصر يومالسبت سنة 2 جلوسكتبه كاظمCodex; ff. i+661Material: Eastern laid paperDimensions: 286 x 165 mm leaf [205 x 100 mm written]Foliation: India Office Library foliation stamped in pencilRuling: No ruling visible; 23 lines per page; vertical spacing 11 lines per 10 cmScript:
